Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge
Another jewel in the Georgia Coastal crown, the Okefenokee Wildlife Refuge is located 45-minutes west of St. Marys and is the largest national wildlife refuge in the eastern United States. The Okefenokee NWR also contains the impressive Okefenokee Swamp. A visitor’s center with a short movie; hiking trails; boardwalk; observation deck; and picnic tables are all added features for guest convenience and a fun time at the swamp.
Cumberland Island National Seashore:
St. Marys is the departure point to Georgia’s largest and southernmost barrier island. The ferry is located one block from the Inn. Cumberland Island is a special place that allows only 300-visitors daily. During busy times of the year (spring and fall, plus all holidays and weekends), you will need to make ferry reservations in advance. Cumberland Island is as nature intended, still wild and relatively untouched by man. This living laboratory is among Georgia’s most treasured resources. Roam the 17-miles of unspoiled, white-sand beach with its majestic sand dunes and waving sea oats. Walk the paths through the pristine maritime forests to the salt marshes — retracing the steps of ancient visitors and native inhabitants. Cumberland Island National Seashore was named one of America’s best wild beaches by National Geographic Traveler. Also, Cumberland Island is a must-visit recommendation in “1000-Places to See in the U.S.A. and Canada Before You Die.” Cumberland Island is an oasis of beauty, tranquility and abundant wildlife, including the wild horses that roam the island. This island gently persuades you to slow down.
