Kayaking along Florida’s First Coast may seem like an obvious thing to do, but what about kayaking in a large city — right in the middle of downtown? Urban Kayaking isn’t exactly a new fad, but it is relatively new to the River City. Launching in the heart of downtown, paddlers are surrounded not only by water, but by concrete, steel and glass. Tall office building line the banks and tower over the river while a network of bridges connect the city that grew up along both banks of this vital waterway. With multiple points of interest and striking scenery, it was only a matter of time before kayaking in downtown Jacksonville became popular.

Paddling in the St. Johns River in Downtown Jacksonville, Florida, is a surreal experience; but it may not be for everyone. There are powerful tidal currents, fast and heavy boat traffic and multiple obstructions in this part of the river that make paddling here unsafe for beginners or paddlers without relevant experience and skills. But, with a guide — and in the right conditions — Jacksonville’s Urban Kayaking experience is truly a fun and unique First Coast Adventure. Join First Coast News anchors Lewis Turner and Jessica Clark as they embark on an urban kayaking expedition with Up The Creek’s Jennifer Koerner (Jacksonville’s Sacajawea) for a recent segment of The First Coast Adventures of Lewis and Clark:
